CD Reviews = great albums that we highly recommend
Must Hear = the very very best of the great albums that we highly recommend

“How can I have 100+ quality music recommendations on GTH and not have gotten to more Greg Brown?” Well let’s fix that. Greg Brown is one of today’s most gifted and revered singer songwriters. Further In is yet another of many examples of his brand of poetic folk music that sustains unending depth, nuance and staying power – I can honestly say I’ve been listening to this CD for 15 years, and it is a fresh today as when I first heard it. Greg Brown is a master songwriter, and this is a near-perfect contemporary folk album that is highly, highly recommended. A Must Hear! (His May ’11 release Freak Flag to be reviewed here soon.) GENRES: Contemporary Folk.

Step 1: read 2 previous Bingham posts - Junky Star and Roadhouse Blues - sample those tunes, then return here. Recommending Bingham’s debut album, Mescalito, now completes a perfect circle, offering yet another diverse mix of weary acoustic-based ballads and roadhouse, Texas barroom rockers, all stripped to their essence. No gloss, no overproduction – just honest, earthy songs, and Bingham has the presence to match the tone to the tale - take it real slow (“Don’t Wait For Me”) or stomp the boots (“Sunshine.”) Bingham’s raspy, throaty vocals croak out vignettes of dusty, road-worn, often down-and-out characters - the tired, the jaded, the restless. Some writers tell a story - Bingham's songs pull you into the scene, striking a nerve with their stark imagery and vivid, real-life characters. Anyone out there that can’t relate to “Hard Times?” Mescalito is a Must Hear album. GENRES: Rock, Mellow Rock,

Once Around is a meticulous recording of melodic, gentler rock songs in the vein of CSN, The Beatles and mellow Matthew Sweet. The band consists of John Stirratt and Pat Sansone (bassist and guitar/keyboardist, respectively, for Wilco), and both deliver silky smooth vocals. Once Around walks the line on the “good” side of pop music – stylistically, these songs share none of Wilco’s sonic edge, instead forging their own path with cerebral, fluid, breezy, meticulously performed songs. Their effortless harmonies make it clear that they are practically one from their endless touring with Wilco. I feel like The Cake Boss in sayng, "the more I'm hearin', the more I'm lovin' it." GENRES: Rock, Mellow Rock.
